Ready to fight.</h2><h3 style="text-align: center;">Sam is an Attorney, Former Special Victims Prosecutor, and Activist</h3>A lifelong progressive Democrat, Sam has been organizing since he was a teenager. In college, he was a vocal leader against the Iraq War and the Bush administration’s attacks on civil liberties. He launched his campus’s first gay rights organization, traveled the country organizing against same-sex marriage bans, and was elected National Political Director of College Democrats of America.After college, Sam deepened his commitment to public service. He worked for a Civil Rights Commission, investigating and addressing accessibility concerns. He saw the justice system from both sides—first as a student public defender, then as a student prosecutor. And he also experienced state government up close, writing legal memoranda, staffing legislative committees, and helping advance legislation that saved taxpayers more than $75 million. Sam was also President of his ACLU chapter, the LGBT Student Bar Association, and a leader in the Law Democrats.After law school, Sam served as a prosecutor in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. Sam worked in the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse &amp; Sex Crimes Bureaus. He spent his career standing up for people who had been failed by the system. When children and young women needed an advocate, Sam stood with them. In Albany, that experience matters — because the job of an Assembly Member is also to protect the vulnerable, confront broken systems, and demand accountability. Sam is ready to bring that same commitment to the State Assembly.For the past four years, Sam led the Columbia County Democrats through one of the most successful periods in its history. Under his leadership, Democrats flipped seats across the county, elected the first Democratic District Attorney in 40 years, and made history by electing New York’s first woman of color Sheriff. Columbia County repeatedly posted some of the highest Democratic turnout rates in the state.Sam continues to show up as an outspoken advocate for economic justice, immigrant rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and labor unions - all interconnected human rights issues. He has called for the immediate passage of NY4All. He is a strong supporter of the New York Health Act.&nbsp; Sam has participated in rallies and advocacy for the full funding and implementation of the NYS Climate Law and the rapid transition to renewable energy.Sam also stands with unions and organized labor and will fight to strengthen worker power and ensure workers can form unions free from interference or intimidation.Sam lives in Claverack with his husband, Ted, and their golden retriever, Velma.&nbsp;<h4 style="text-align: center;"></h4>

For too long, utility monopolies have raised rates with little oversight while delivering poor service. I will support public power, stronger regulation, increased transparency, and real consequences when companies like Central Hudson fail to meet basic standards.To lower costs now and in the future, we need to rapidly transition to renewable energy. I’m done with Albany politicians like Didi Barrett echoing the talking points of fossil fuel companies that bankroll their campaigns while families get stuck with higher bills.I'll fight hard to fully implement NY's historic Climate Law, which will bring down costs. New York should be leading on climate policy, not caving to fossil fuel corporations and utility monopolies.

Health care in New York is too expensive and too hard to access, especially in the Hudson Valley, where entire communities are health care deserts. Too many people have to travel long distances for basic care. Our rural EMS systems are stretched thin, putting people at risk when every minute counts.That’s unacceptable.I support the New York Health Act to guarantee truly universal coverage, and I will fight to invest in rural health care and strengthen EMS infrastructure so everyone in our district can get the care they need, when they need it. New York should be a leader on health care. Albany is failing us. It's time to be bold.

In the Hudson Valley, child care can be prohibitively expensive if you can even find it. Many communities in our district are child care deserts, where families have no real options. Parents are being forced to choose between their jobs and their kids, and that’s not a real choice.It’s time to make universal child care a reality for every Hudson Valley family.

Universal Child Care

Across the Hudson Valley, rents are soaring, and home prices have climbed so high that working families are being pushed out. People who have done everything right are one unexpected expense away from losing their homes. This is not an accident. It is the result of years of inaction in Albany while costs spiraled out of control. We need to treat this like the crisis it is.It's time to rehab existing unoccupied homes, build social and affordable housing, and protect tenants from displacement.

So why does it feel like nobody can afford to live here?The answer is simple: our economy is rigged.The richest New Yorkers are doing better than ever, while working people are squeezed from every direction. And when Albany says we "can’t afford” housing, child care, or health care, what they really mean is they’re unwilling to ask the ultra-wealthy to pay their fair share.I don’t accept that.
