Samuel D. Hodge, Jr. is a professor of Legal Studies at Temple University where he teaches both law and anatomy. He also serves as the Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning. Sam is considered one of the most popular continuing legal education instructors in the country and lectures frequently to attorneys, judges, physicians, insurance professionals and governmental agencies on anatomy throughout the United States. He has received numerous teaching awards including being named a Temple University Great Teacher, a Master Teacher by the Academy of Teachers and the American Academy of Legal Studies, and Professor of the Year. His Anatomy for Lawyers course was the recipient of the ACLEA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Continuing Legal Education, he was awarded the Temple University Faculty Senate Service Award and his interactive teaching style has received much media attention including stories in The New York Times, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Philadelphia Inquirer, National Public Radio and television. The popularity of Sam’s courses has resulted in his teaching more than 25,000 students at Temple’s Business, Law and Medical Schools. He has also taught courses on multiple occasions in Rome, Paris and Tokyo.
Sam is a prolific author with books that include Head Trauma and Brain Injuries for Lawyers, ABA (2016); The Forensic Autopsy, ABA (2014); The Spine, ABA (2013); and Clinical Anatomy for Attorneys, ABA (2012). He wrote the award winning book, Anatomy for Litigators, ALI-ABA (2007); Law in American Society, McGraw Hill (2016), Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business, McGraw Hill (2014) and Thermography and Personal Injury Litigation, Wiley Law (1987). He has co-authored several of the annual supplements to Orthopedic Disability and Expert Testimony, Wiley Law, and has written chapters in litigation texts on how to examine and cross-examine the medical expert. Other writing endeavors include the authoring of over 150 articles in a variety of medical and legal journals. His research has been cited by the courts, in law review articles, legal journals, legislation and textbooks. Professor Hodge is a graduate of the Temple University Beasley School of Law and the Graduate Division of the Law School. Sam obtained a Certificate in Law and Anatomy from Temple University School of Medicine and received mediation training at the Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Law School.
He is also a seasoned litigator who enjoys an AV pre-eminent rating and has been named a Top Lawyer in Pennsylvania, a Top Insurance Lawyer and he was selected by Suburban Life and Philadelphia Life Magazines to their “Awesome Attorney’s List. Professor Hodge is a member of the American College of Legal Medicine and the American Association of Anatomists.
As a sidelight, Sam maintains a music publishing company with songs that have been recorded by artist such as Barry Manilow, Bill Haley and the Comets, the Isley Brothers and the Pointer Sisters. These compositions have also been featured in a number of television shows, documentaries and movies including The Wolf of Wall Street.
